Jaisalmer town situated in west of pink city jaipur on yellowish sandstone is a World heritage Site .
Jaisalmer was founded by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 after which Jaisalmer saw many ups and down with frequent war with jodhpur and Bikaner which finalley ended up and taken over by Sultanate of Delhi in 1298 by Aluddin Khilji.
Once known for an important entrepot route for goods such as silk and Spices, which gained city to path of richness after which merchants built magnificent havelis.
However after emergence of Surat and Bombay city trade started seeing a gradual downfall in trading further death blow to this town emerged during partition when jaisalmers life line trade route was severed by new sensitive Pakistani Border.
City is now a major military outpost with jet aircraft regularly roaring on the ramparts of glory.
Jaisalmer fort is one of the largest fort built in 1156 AD by its ruler Rawal Jaisal. Situated in amidst Thar Desert sand this fort stand still with its massive yellow sandstone walls.
Fort is divided into three layers.
Outer layer is made of solid yellow stone which gives a light honey gold effect during sunset beacause of this slight goldy effect it is also called as Golden Fort or Sonar Quila by local.
Second layer is built like a snake crawler and third layer inside snake wall which was used as precautionary wall by Rajput warriors from enemies where they use to spill hot oil and water ,throw rocks.
Jaisalmer Fort is declared as world heritage palace or site by UNESCO in 2013 under the group of Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
